Dozens of checks have been stolen from US Postal Service dropoff boxes throughout Sandwich in recent weeks and the most recent victim lost more than $40,000, police said.

The owner of Sandwich Food Mart contacted police on December 9, at 8:03 PM to report someone stole a check he put in the mail, made it payable to someone else and changed the amount.

Police traced the names to people in the Boston area but are unsure if they are connected to the series of similar incidents throughout town.

Checks have been stolen from the Forestdale, East Sandwich and downtown Sandwich post office dropoff boxes; these felonies are prompting the involvement of Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy, who is assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Victims had their bank accounts replenished, and the incidents remain under investigation.
