First Night

New Year’s Eve revelers hoping to attend this year’s First Night Sandwich will have to look elsewhere for a way to ring in the new year.

Organizers of the event, who in late September said they were moving ahead with the celebration, have decided to pull the plug.

“We can not in good conscience sponsor any type of event in celebration of the new year,” Suzanne Evans, event director for First Night Sandwich, stated in a Facebook post on Saturday, November 14, announcing the decision. “It was our hope that we could provide you with an event that would feel normal. However with the resurgence of the COVID virus, we believe it would be safer to cancel our entire event.”

In September, the volunteers who organize First Night stated they were going to try to find a way to host a safe community celebration.

“We are ready to make a joyful noise while we celebrate kicking 2020 to the curb,” Ms. Evans stated at the time.

In her Facebook post, Ms. Evans said the decision to cancel was heartbreaking.

A few people commented on the post, expressing their disappointment but also reassuring the group that it was the right decision to make, given the rising COVID-19 numbers on the Cape.
