A 7-year-old girl was flown to a Boston hospital after a family dog bit her at a Sandwich residence on Tuesday, May 19.

Police and paramedics were called to a George Gallant Road home at 12:54 PM, when the bite was reported. Police said first aid was administered to the girl upon arrival and she was then flown by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries to her face and eyes.

The dog, which belonged to a relative of the girl, was dead when police arrived. Police said they did not know how the American bulldog died.

Animal control and the police department are investigating the incident.
