Police arrested a Sandwich man on a drunk-driving charge after an employee at a restaurant reported him passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle while picking up a curbside lunch.
Police were called to Two Brothers Pizza & Mexican on Cotuit Road at 3:33 PM on Saturday, February 13, for a report of a possible drunk driver outside the South Sandwich restaurant.
According to police, the employee said the man was asleep behind the wheel. When the employee went out to speak with him, he had to bang on the window to wake him up. The employee also said that during their conversation, the man kept nodding off.
The employee was so concerned that he went back inside and called police.
When police arrived, they said they found the man again asleep behind the wheel with the vehicle’s engine running.
After knocking again to wake him, police identified the man as James M. Brooks IV, 34, of Bourne Hay Road in Sandwich.
Police said Mr. Brooks had glassy, bloodshot eyes and smelled of beer. Police also reported seeing a four-pack of beer in the back seat with only one beer left.
Mr. Brooks denied drinking, police said. According to the police report, he said he was on his way home from work and decided to stop for lunch.
Police conducted a series of field sobriety tests on Mr. Brooks, which they said he failed.
Mr. Brooks was arrested and charged with drunk driving.
