An off-duty police officer stopped a potential theft at Stop & Shop on Monday, October 14.

The officer was at the Quaker Meetinghouse Road location at 3:37 PM and reportedly saw a woman put several items in her purse before attempting to leave without paying. The officer called the police station to advise them of the situation.

When officers arrived, they were met by the off-duty officer and store security, who had detained the woman, identified as Sarah L. Sawyer, 34, of North Truro. The items were valued at $76.90, police said.

Ms. Sawyer was arrested and charged with shoplifting by asportation for a second offense.
