Police are warning residents that legitimate companies will not ask for payments via gift cards after an East Sandwich resident was scammed out of more than $1,100.
A Fox Run resident contacted police at 12:11 PM to report that he had been contacted by someone who claimed to be a representative of AT&T, which was his cellphone provider. The person told the resident that if he prepaid for the cellphone and DirectTV accounts, the resident would be given a discount.
The scammer had the resident pay for the accounts using eBay gift cards in the amount of $1,169.
Officer Michael Wood said no one should buy gift cards as a form of payment to a company.
“Anyone asking you to purchase any type of prepaid gift card is a scam,” he said. “Once you give those numbers out, you’re done.”
No suspects have been identified in this case.
