The Sandwich School Committee has rated Superintendent Pamela A. Gould as having met or exceeded all of her goals for the current school year.
At the school board’s meeting on Wednesday, June 9, chairman Donald DiGiacomo read some of the comments from members of the board regarding Dr. Gould’s performance this year in leading the district, particularly during a pandemic. The comments were read anonymously.
Dr. Gould was commended for how well she kept in constant communication with families when it came to the rapidly changing COVID-19 protocols.
According to the comments that were read, throughout the year Dr. Gould kept in contact with families and staff through email, robocalls, and recorded videos. She was also thorough in the reports she gave at school committee meetings and in the documentation she sent to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Mr. DiGiacomo said.
Mr. DiGiacomo read a comment stating that Dr. Gould made sure that, when practicable, students were able to participate in sports and activities.
Mr. DiGiacomo added that Dr. Gould was also instrumental in ensuring that students in arts programs were able to participate in their chosen activities.
“Those are the things you don’t think of as wellness,” he said. “It’s not just about reading, writing and arithmetic.”
It was concluded that Dr. Gould had met or exceeded all of the benchmarks set for this year.
Before taking a vote on the evaluation, board member Kevin Sareault said that while the year was chaotic, the district had a steady hand at the helm.
He said that whether it was the district’s day-to-day needs or responding to someone complaining on social media at 10 PM on a Saturday night, Dr. Gould was there to guide the staff and families through this year.
“I know there’s a whole staff behind you, but there’s a captain of the ship,” he said.
He said that during the past year, he has spoken to parents who have said that they are so thankful that their children have been in Sandwich schools this year, and has spoken to people who work in other districts who have said that Sandwich is doing it the right way.
Dr. Gould said that yes, she has a team behind her, but she also credited the school board for being supportive. Superintendents in some other districts did not have school board support, or had their own agendas, and as a result did not have a pleasant year, she said.
The board voted unanimously to approve Dr. Gould’s evaluation as it was presented.
