It is the middle of August. And even though the days are still hot and the beaches are still crowded, it is time to start thinking about the first day of school.
Classes within the Sandwich School District will start for most of the students on Tuesday, September 3. Preschoolers at the Forestdale School will start the following week on Monday, September 9.
All classroom assignments are expected to be released by the end of this week, Friday, August 16.
District business manager Michelle Austin said that the bus drivers have started their work of testing out the bus routes for the year. Ms. Austin said the bus routes will likely be released by the end of next week.
The bus routes are still being finalized, with district data specialist Erin Piantedosi finishing up the work adding the incoming kindergartners into the district’s computer system, Ms. Austin said.
Once the bus routes are released, they will be printed in The Sandwich Enterprise.
There has not been any change to school start times this year, with Forestdale starting at 9 AM and ending at 3:30 PM, Oak Ridge starting at 8:15 AM and ending at 2:45 PM, and the STEM Academy and Sandwich High School starting at 7:30 AM and ending at 2 PM.
There is a significant change to dismissal times at all schools every Wednesday. In order to accommodate professional development for teachers, school will be dismissed one hour early every Wednesday afternoon.
The district has partnered with a new food service company for the coming school year. The Abbey Group is bringing fresh, local food into the schools as well as eliminating the use of expanded polystyrene foam trays.
Student lunch accounts will still be handled using My School Bucks.
There has been an administration change, with Bernard McNamara picking up the pupil services department where Marilyn Vrountas left off. Ms. Vrountas left Sandwich for a position in the Somerville School District. Mr. McNamara has a background in psychology and comes to the district from Hanover.
