Cigarette ashes gone astray set off a series of events that will result in charges for a Forestdale man.

While Sandwich police officers were in the parking lot of the police station at 1:46 AM on June 10 they heard multiple small explosions as a white van sped past on Cotuit Road.

Officers pursued the van and saw the driver throwing lit firecrackers out of the window. One of firecrackers struck the police cruiser.

Police stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as a 21-year-old Forestdale man.

The man told police that he went to put out his cigarette, but the ashes ignited the firecrackers. He felt he had no choice but to then throw them out of the window.

As a result of this incident, the man will be summoned to court on charges of throwing objects on a public way and unlawful possession of fireworks.
