Decorated parking spaces at Sandwich High School were vandalized Friday evening October 4 with swastikas and sexual images, said Superintendent Pam Gould in an email.
Four parking spaces were defaced. Two swastikas and different sexual images were painted on the spots.
“Regardless of the intent, and even though some of the images are simple child’s play, painting swastikas brought this to another level and is a hateful act that will be dealt with very seriously by the school and possibly the police,” Ms. Gould said in an email. “I have confidence that this is not who the student body is as a whole and that we will learn and grow from this as a school body.”
Students had been decorating their parking spaces as part of a fundraiser, Ms. Gould said. Because the parking lot is set to be repaved next summer, the school thought it would be fun for the students to individualize their spots.
Sandwich Police made the school aware of the incident late Saturday morning, she said.
Right now, the school is focused on the investigation to determine who is responsible, she said.
“We are hopeful that this investigation will conclude swiftly so that we can learn why the perpetrator(s) did this. Then we will proceed from there,” Ms. Gould said in an email.
