James A. Erickson of West Barnstable, formerly of Sandwich, died on July 16.

He was the husband of Dianne (Backer) Erickson, to whom he was married for 57 years.

Born in Middleboro, he was the son of Ronald and Priscilla (Pete) Erickson and graduated from Sandwich High School in 1959.

He served in the Massachusetts National Guard, Buzzards Bay, and he also served on the Sandwich Police Department from 1965 to 1970.

Mr. Erickson worked at the Cape Cod Times from 1960 to 2004. He was the union president of the Communication Workers of America for the New Bedford-Standard Times and the Cape Cod Times. He was also the owner and operator of Jim’s Small Engine Repair.

As an avid outdoorsman and hunter, he was a life member of the NRA and Shawme Fish and Game Club. He was also a member of Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church in Sandwich.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, Eric Erickson of Pocasset, Christopher Erickson of Anson, Maine, Lynne Oakley of West Barnstable; grandchildren Michael Erickson, Erica Pound, Tyler Oakley, Carter Oakley, great-granddaughter Ava, and other family.

A graveside service will be held Friday, July 24, at 11 AM at the Sandwich Town Cemetery, Route 130, Sandwich. A gathering will be held at the cemetery before the burial beginning at 10 AM.
