The Reverend Deacon John Joseph Emmert Sr. of Sagamore Beach died unexpectedly on March 2. He was 74.
He was born in Dorchester to Leo and Bridget Emmert. After his father died when he was 14, Mr. Emmert augmented his mother’s housekeeping salary by working at a fruit stand while attending Catholic Memorial High School.
He studied business and engineering at Boston University and Northeastern University but found his true calling as a doorman at some of Boston’s finest hotels.
From age 20 to 74, Mr. Emmert took few trips himself because the world passed through his doors. Saudi royalty, presidents, Hollywood actors, rock bands, sports stars and the visiting family were all greeted with the same smile and caring nature.
During his tenure at the Four Seasons, his peers nominated him in 1996 for the Silver Plume Award for Guest Ambassador of the Year, which he won.
His second calling was as deacon in the Diocese of Fall River. Ordained in 1993, he served Corpus Christi Parish in East Sandwich, officiating at baptisms and weddings, wakes and funerals, and delivering insightful homilies during Mass. He believed officiating at both of his children’s weddings and all his grandchildren’s baptisms were the most important achievements of his life.
Mr. Emmert leaves his wife, Susan (Thibeault) Emmert; daughter Cari Tosh and her husband, Andrew, of Austin, Texas; son John Emmert Jr. and his wife, Yenisei, of Medford; four grandchildren; brother Raymond Emmert of West Roxbury; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 14, at 11 AM at Corpus Christi Parish in East Sandwich. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception in the parish center to follow.
