Miriam Elizabeth West of Sandwich, who was known as Liz, died April 6 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. She was 81.

She was the wife of 50 years of Robert M. West.

Born on New Year’s Day in Albany, New York, she was the daughter of Hjalmar and Maria (Takala) Leppanen.

Ms. West was a homemaker who enjoyed selling Tupperware and was an avid reader and bowler. She often sent care packages to the US military deployed, and was proud of her family’s service. A volunteer throughout her life, she particularly loved helping elementary students with their reading skills.

We are very grateful to her friends and neighbors in Washington, PA and Sandwich, MA. She loved all of you and we can never express our gratitude for the support and friendship you gave to her.

In addition to her husband, she leaves her children, Robert C. West of San Antonio, Texas, and Mary E. Rodgers of Fredericksburg, Virginia; her sister Ingrid Roy; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

She was predeceased by her four sisters and three brothers.

Private cremation is under the direction of Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Sandwich.
