Ronald A. Downing, 87, of East Sandwich died January 3.

He was the husband of Alyce (Borgstrom) Downing for 64 years. They had been high school sweethearts.

The son of Alexander and Cathleen (Montague) Downing, he was born in Cambridge and raised in Arlington.

Mr. Downing was a graduate of Arlington High School, Bentley School of Accounting, Northeastern University and the Graduate School of Savings Banking at Brown University.

He served in the US Army Reserve in 1957.

A 30-year resident of Waltham, he raised his family there and was president of Weymouth Savings Bank, retiring in 1997.

Known for his quick wit and love of learning, Mr. Downing was an avid reader and enjoyed his retirement years living on Cape Cod.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, Michael Downing of Tewksbury, Scott Downing of Oxford, and Lauren Downing of Weymouth; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Downing and Richard Downing.

A Mass of Christian Burial was said on Tuesday, January 11, at Corpus Christi Church in East Sandwich.

Burial was at Sandwich Town Cemetery.
