William J. Coonz of Sandwich, 73, died unexpectedly on September 30.

Born in Bennington, Vermont, he was the son of Orwin Coonz and Mary Fogarty.

Following his graduation from high school, in September 1967 he joined the US Air Force and remained for 20 years, retiring as a master sergeant.

After serving in the Vietnam War, Mr. Coonz lived abroad for 10 years with his family. First they lived in Turkey (1975-1977) and then Norway (1978-1985) before settling in Sandwich.

Upon retirement from his military career, he stayed busy with other work.

He leaves his children, Jerome Coonz and his wife, Carey Coonz, and Karianne (Coonz) Tosca and her husband, Gerard Tosca; three grandchildren, Cody Coonz, Connor Coonz and Ashlie Tosca; a sister, Mary Martinelli; his partner, MaryLou MacDonald, and her family; his former spouse, Dianne Coonz; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Darlene Cushman and Constance Coonz.

A celebration of his life will be at a later date.
