On May 19, 155 determined young riders aged 3-14, along with more than 50 volunteers, assembled at the Sandwich Marina for the Third Annual Sandwich PMC Kids Ride. “PMC Kids” is an extension of the Pan-Mass Challenge, the largest and most efficient athletic fundraiser in the country. At 9 AM sharp, they rolled out of the Harbormaster’s parking lot headed for the Canal path—the same path that is part of the “big” PMC” the first weekend every August. Greeted by the fire monitors of the Sandwich Fire boat shooting water high into the air as they turned onto the Canal path, they pedaled westbound for the bridges. Undeterred by blustery headwinds, those 155 PMC Kids collectively rode more than 1,250 miles on their way to raising more than $42,000 for the Jimmy Fund. Representing a 21 percent increase over the 2018 ride, the Ride’s three-year fundraising total stands at more than $96,000, with 100 percent of it going directly to cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

An event such as this takes the contributions of a great many to ensure success. The Sandwich PMC Kids Committee would like to publicly thank all the riders, volunteers, supporters & parents who so willingly and enthusiastically supported the event. While space limits our ability to list the 50 local businesses and agencies that supported this year’s ride, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the terrific support of the team at the Sandwich Harbormaster’s Office, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Sandwich Police and Fire Departments, as without their collective support the ride would simply have not have been possible.

A guiding principle of the Sandwich PMC Kids ride is that “we all rest in the shade of trees we did not plant.” This past Sunday, 155 kids, with the support of so many in this wonderful community, planted seeds that will someday make the difference in the life of a cancer patient. Together, they know that the cure is out there—maybe just over that next hill...

On behalf of the entire PMC Kids planning committee, thank you!

Closer by the mile…
