As a member of Sustainable Practices, and someone who cares deeply about our environment, I support the Plastic Bottle ban.
Plastic is having negative impacts on the entire planet, not just here on Cape Cod. We need to reduce our consumption. Not just some of us, but all of us.
Banning plastic bottles is one way of doing this. Over 50 billion plastic water bottles were sold in the US last year. Plastic bottles use over 17 million barrels of crude oil (a fossil fuel) to produce. Recycling is no longer the answer. The small amount that are recycled, roughly 23 percent are again using more oil to return it to a useable product. Some are buried in landfills, which leach into our soil and water. Some are incinerated, causing harmful chemicals to be introduced to our air.
Every piece of plastic ever made still exists.
We do not need plastic bottles; we never had them before roughly 1990, and we survived.
Marketing strategies have made us think that bottled water is better. Most of as already pay for water that is readily available, and more highly tested and regulated that bottled water. Many brands of bottled water are basically tap water, marked up to the consumer by as much as 400 percent. Most bottled water costs the manufacturer about .05 cents a bottle. Is this really worth the cost to our environment? I, for one, think not and hope that you will agree.
Please vote to yes to the Plastic Bottle ban in your town; it is the right thing to do. Make Cape Cod an even better place to live.
