I note that the candidacy of Steven Xiarhos means yet another former professional fireman or policeman is running for office on the Upper Cape. Please do not believe that I have anything against these hard-working men (sadly, there are few women in public office in our community) but some diversity in background, experience and vision among our representatives is now needed.

As a representative for the 5th Barnstable District, Jim Dever’s work as a labor attorney for government workers and as a veteran member of the Sandwich School Committee would make him uniquely well-qualified to promote improved local education, affordable housing for ALL community residents and support for a wide array of first responders: police, firefighters and all healthcare workers.

Feeling safe in our community includes trusting our elected officials to work for a broad communal safety net that brings housing, food, environmental, educational and public health security to all residents. These are troubling and financially difficult times for many people. We need a strong and fiscally experienced advocate and negotiator like Jim Dever to be our voice in our state government.
