The Sandwich High School volleyball team ran into a buzz saw in the form of Barnstable on Tuesday, March 23, in Sandwich. The hard-hitting Red Raiders scored a sweep over the Knights as they won by scores of 25-15, 25-9, 25-9.
Barnstable’s attack was ferocious throughout the match. It was led by Caroline Kiehnau’s 13 kills.
Ella McCabe started out Sandwich’s best game, the first, by scoring a point on the first play of the match with a big block at the net. She had two kills and another block in the match.
Early on the Knights played cohesively and kept rallies going with the veteran BHS squad. That rhythm dissipated in the second game and the third. “We fell a bit in the second and the third set, and lost our rhythm,” coach Giulia Leite said. “Once we lost it we couldn’t get it back. We had many good plays, but in the end we couldn’t pull through.”
Paula Tangulig had 13 digs in the match and was excellent in the third game. Maria Mozeleski had a kill and an ace. Sydney Hanlon had six assists, an ace and a kill. Erica Sundermeyeer had a kill and seven assists. Aneka Pigott played strong defensively. Briana Stanton had a kill and several blocks.
