If the new year is anything like the close of the old one for the Sandwich High School boys’ ice hockey team then great days lie ahead. The Knights played their penultimate game of the 2021 part of their season in Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon, December 29, with a downright dominant showing against an overmatched Middleboro High School team. SHS got two goals in each period and toppled the Sachems by a 6-0 count.
Sandwich is now 4-1-1 overall on the season. The team has won its last three in a row, with all the victories coming by five goals or more.
Goaltender Mitchell Norkevicius picked up the shutout in net for the Knights, his first of the year. He stopped all 14 shots on goal that the Sachems were able to muster as they put three on in the first, seven in the second and four in the third. Sandwich had 54 shots on net for itself.
Sophomore Jack Connolly scored his first career hat trick in the win for the Knights with both of his team’s second period goals, and then another in the third. He also had an assist. Colin McIver, James Mawhinney and Chris Cardillo had the other goals for the Knights. McIver also had two assists.
McIver broke the ice with the eventual game-winning goal at 6:20 of the first with assists coming from Connolly and Cardillo. Mawhinney scored late in the period, at 13:13 off a feed from Avery Richardson.
In the second period both goals came from Connolly. His first of the frame, set up by McIver, was at the 8:50 mark of the second, and his second — and unassisted tally — was at 13:14. Connolly then completed the hat trick just 31 seconds into the third period, with McIver and Anthony Kent assisting. Cardillo finished things off at 9:54.
SHS returns to league play to close out the season today, at home, against Dennis-Yarmouth High School at 7 PM in a New Year’s Eve tilt. Sandwich enters the game with a 2-0 mark in Cape and Islands League games.
