It did not take long for the offense to find a groove for the Sandwich High School field hockey team. The defending Cape and Islands League champions opened their 2021 campaign on Wednesday, September 8, with a nonleague game just over the Sagamore Bridge at Plymouth North High School and the Cape Codders returned back down Route 3 with a 7-1 victory in tow.
Buoyed by a hat trick from Haley McLaughlin and two goals from Paige Hawkins, the Knights pounded home the win to get things started on the right foot. The team will now have plenty of time to work on whatever it is that head coach Kelsey Beaton wants it to improve upon because the schedule has it enjoying a long layoff before game two. The squad is back in action on Friday, September 17, on Nantucket for a 3:45 PM game against the Whalers.
Hawkins began the scoring for the Knights just minutes into the game by putting home a feed from Lilly Tobin. The lead doubled to 2-0 early in the second when Haley McLaughlin scored an unassisted goal, which was followed by a goal late in the half by Emily Souke off of a Hawkins assist.
Two goals just four minutes apart in the third quarter put the game out of reach. Hawkins picked up her second of the game, and the team’s fourth, early in the period off a feed from McLaughlin. Hawkins then returned the favor by setting up McLaughlin for her second of the game. The same duo connected again early in the fourth quarter as McLaughlin finished off her hat trick.
Haley Lemire finished off the scoring in the fourth quarter for Sandwich. She was set up by McLaughlin, who finished the game with five points (three goals, two assists).
Sarah Currey picked up the win in goal. She faced four shots and made three saves overall.
