Participating in the MIAA tournament can be jarring. At one moment you’re at the top of the world, celebrating a 6-0 victory. Two days later you are out of the postseason, losers by a 2-0 score to a good team.

It’s just over. Seniors done. Underclassmen with nine months to go until they get to do it all over again.

The sudden exit for the Sandwich High School boys’ soccer team happened on Saturday, November 6. After opening the tournament with a resounding 6-0 win over an overmatched Diman Regional Voc-Tech, the Knights had to step it up quite a bit in the competition department on Saturday and were defeated by Old Rochester Regional, 2-0.

That was that, the end of a very good season for the Blue Knights as the 7th-seeded Bulldogs came up with a big showing and won the day. Sandwich played well against a very good team but could not find the back of the net and suffered the close defeat. Old Rochester got a goal just five minutes into the game, and then another late in the first half, to take the two-goal advantage. SHS pressed but could not find the equalizer.

It was a different story altogether in the first round of the tournament as the Knights scored a blowout win against Diman. Owen Beaton got things started on a corner just two minutes into the game, and then Jake Sutton and Braden Gilfoy popped home goals for a 3-0 lead. Joe Morrison closed the game with a hat trick to give the team a lopsided win.

SHS finished off its year at 6-7-4 overall. Sutton led the team with 11 goals and three assists in his final season. Morrison had six goals and two assists while Gilfoy and Matt DiGiacamo each scored three goals for the season. Matt Hemon, Matt Murray, and Beaton had two goals each.

In goal Sullivan Gaffney played about 60 percent of the overall minutes in net, finishing with a 2.35 goals against. Sean Murphy played about 40 percent with a 1.75 goals against. They combined for two shutouts.
