He may have taken the loss, but Sandwich senior Dillon Ryan was nothing short of spectacular on the hill for the Blue Knights baseball team.
The lanky right-hander took the ball for Sandwich in the Division 3 South Sectional semifinal against Ashland and pitched his heart out—going seven-plus innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and five walks while recording 11 punch outs.
He had nearly every pitch working for him—including his wipeout slider—as he retired 16 of 18 batters at one point, including a stretch of sitting down 13 straight batters from the end of the second inning through the end of the sixth.
“He did exactly what he did all year. He battled and ground a game out against a really good team,” Sandwich head baseball coach Brian Tomasini said. “He’s been tough all season and just special the last two years for us. He gave us a chance, like he always has, today.”
