Question: Who scored the first goal at the new field?

Answer: Sandwich’s Bridget Gleason.

Question: Which team won the first high school game at the new field?

Answer: The Sandwich High School girls’ soccer team.

Gleason, a senior captain for the Lady Knights, popped in a rebound at 13:56 of the third quarter, and she and her teammates made that one stand up as they topped the former Red Raiders (new nickname still pending) by a 1-0 count to begin the 2020 season in style.

Senior Hanlyn O’Neill assisted on Gleason’s goal, which came after a well-played but scoreless first half. After that, and before it, senior goalie Sarah Lutsic made all of the saves to secure the shutout for the Knights. She made a couple of big stops against last year’s Cape and Islands scoring leader Liv Varetimos to keep the clean sheet.

Coach Dave DeConto said senior captain Meghan Lizotte and junior Maddie Vachon did a strong job on the back line to assist in Lutsic’s shutout. Daria Horman was solid in the defensive midfield, and freshman Liza Palazesi, playing in her first varsity game, came off the bench to make some great plays as well.
