Traveling to the island on Wednesday, February 12, the Sandwich boys’ basketball team played the role of spoiler for the Vineyarders in a Cape & Islands League crossover showdown.
Martha’s Vineyard, honoring its seniors before the game, was looking to secure its place in the Division 3 South Sectional against the Knights, but instead found itself amidst a rockfight with the team from the mainland.
Sandwich was clinging to a 64-62 lead following a successful 3-pointer from MV senior Jared Regan with 12 seconds left in the game, when junior co-captain Chris Cronin stepped to the free throw line for the first of a one-and-one situation.
He missed the first shot and MV corralled the rebound, but couldn’t convert a game-tying or game-winning shot. The Knights took the ferry back home victorious, 64-62.
Cronin led all scorers with a game-high 31 points—24 of which came in the second half. Senior co-captain JP Downes and junior forward Colby Leighton each added 10 points as Sandwich shot well in crunch time, going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the last quarter.
Martha’s Vineyard leading scorer was Regan with 20 points while Mike Trusty put forth 12 points and senior Jeremy Regan had nine.
Back on January 14, the Knights earned a 57-50 win in East Sandwich against the island team, earning the regular season sweep. On Thursday, February 13, Sandwich traveled to Falmouth in a rescheduled game from Tuesday, February 11 due to a leak in the Clippers’ Antonucci Fieldhouse roof. The game was completed after press time Thursday, February 13.
Sandwich (7-8, 5-5 C&I Atlantic) hosts Nantucket in another Cape & Islands League cross over game Friday, February 14 — marking the third game in as many days for the Knights. They conclude their season February 17 on the road against Rockland at 4:15 PM.
