The Sandwich girls’ soccer team withstood a strong defensive gameplan from visiting Nantucket to score a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Hosting the Whalers on Tuesday, October 1, the Knights won the game with eight minutes remaining off the foot of junior Bridget Gleason and escaped with the Cape & Islands-Atlantic win at DeConto Stadium.
The two teams played to an offensive stalemate in the first half, 0-0, although the Knights dominated possession with some precision passing and a soft touch. Sandwich grew comfortable holding court in Nantucket’s defensive third of the field, but couldn’t penetrate the Whalers' back line until late in the second half.
In the win, junior goalie Sarah Lustic recorded her second shutout of the season.
