It was a convincing first Cape & Islands League win for the Sandwich boys’ hockey team on Wednesday, January 8 at Gallo Ice Arena.
Three Blue Knights scored and senior goaltender Carson Schemenaur recorded the shutout on their way to a 3-0 win against Nauset.
Senior Zack Hawkins broke the game open in the first period, scoring the only goal Schemenaur would need on an assist from linemate Rob Cardillo. That 1-0 advantage stood up for the rest of the first period and the entirety of the second period.
Though the score remained the same in the second, the frame was not without chances for Sandwich. Midway through the period, the Knights were awarded a five-minute power play after the Warriors were called for boarding. Despite having a number of strong opportunities, the man-advantage went scoreless. The Knights also had half of a power play at the tail end of the period that went without a goal.
Nevertheless, Sandwich took the ice in the third with the one-goal lead and looking to add to it. Senior captain Connor Durant doubled his team’s lead early in the third, connecting on a pass from Kevin Jordan. Junior Tim Clark iced the game late in the period as he hammered home a pass from Durant.
Sandwich 5, Shawseen Valley Tech 3
Down, but never out, Sandwich battled back from an early first-period deficit to pick up two hard-earned points on Saturday, January 4, at Gallo Ice Arena.
The Knights trailed visiting Shawsheen Valley Tech 1-0 through one period of play and found themselves tied heading into the second intermission before two unanswered third-period tallies gave the hosts the non-league win, 5-3.
Junior Jack Greeley scored the second of his two goals on the night to break the 3-3 tie in the third. Cardillo and Hawkins assisted on the eventual game-winning score. But Sandwich wasn’t done in the third. On the penalty kill with Shawsheen opting to pull its goalie for the extra skater, Cardillo fought his way through for the empty-net goal to ice the game.
While the Knights won the game in the third period, the comeback was sparked in the second period. Max Slicer got his team on the board, finishing off a pass from Durant, to knot the game at one apiece. Following another Shawseen goal, Greeley put in his first of the game to tie things back up at two on an unassisted tally. Clark gave Sandwich its first lead of the night, 3-2, when he was set up by Cardillo and Hawkins. After missing the last few games, Schemenaur returned to his perch between the pipes.
The Knights didn’t let a late score from the visitors to tie the game, 3-3, heading into the second intermission derail their comeback efforts.
Sandwich (4-5, 1-1 C&I Atlantic) travels to the Hyannis Youth & Community Center to meet Barnstable in a Cape & Islands Atlantic Division showdown Saturday, January 11, at 7:40 PM.
