Six Pack

Sophomore Avery Richardson easily beats his man and fires off a shot for one of his six goals in a lopsided win over Barnstable High on Tuesday afternoon at DeConto Stadium.

Doing nothing to take the shine off their top-ranking in the most recent Division IV state power rankings, the Sandwich High boys’ lacrosse team methodically chopped down league rivals Barnstable at home on Tuesday afternoon. SHS jumped out early on the Redhawks and pulled away with ease, routing the squad from Hyannis by a 16-3 score at DeConto Stadium.

Sophomore Avery Richardson was the offensive pacesetter in the game for the team, scoring six goals with one assist in the contest, making it look easy at times with a reverse shot goal in the second half, and a one-hander over the goalie’s shoulder. In total, nine different players found the back of the cage against the overmatched Redhawks as Sandwich led 4-1 after one and 9-2 by the half.

Midfielder Matt DiGiacomo had two goals and one assist and faceoff man Connor Stack scored two in the game. Cole Rodgers and Caleb Richardson each added a goal and an assist while Tim Souza, Anthony Kent, Jesse Woodill and Tyler McNeill potted one apiece.

Next up for the Knights is one of their toughest opponents of the season. SHS travels up to Cohasset High School on March 13 for a marquee under the lights showdown with the Skippers at 6 PM. The two teams, ranked numbers one and two in the most recent MIAA Division 4 boys’ lacrosse power poll, face off in a game that could be a preview of a big time tourney game down the road.

Cohasset, which was ranked just behind the top-ranked Knights, has struggled of late, dropping three of its last five games, but the team has played some of the top southeastern Massachusetts squads around during that stretch. The team had a close, two-goal, loss to Duxbury last week, and also dropped games to Hanover and Scituate.

The winner of the game should hold the No. 1 spot in the next power rankings.
